Italian Renaissance Revival Style Architecture

Style Summary

Italian Renaissance Revival style architecture was in vogue in the two decades before the start of the US Civil War in 1860. This style is less ornate than other styles, though the elaborate cornice commanded attention by virtue of its prominent size. Features of this style include:

  • rectangular forms
  • flat facades
  • smooth texture exterior surfaces

This style rebuffed ornamentation in favor of refinement through proportion and restraint. Some great examples of this style are found in the brownstone row houses in Manhattan.
